Intra-group peer review

An intra-group assessment follows on from group work. In contrast to cross-assessment, participants are not asked to assess their own work, but the members of their group with whom they have collaborated, based on behavioral criteria.

Why set up an intra-group valuation?

Benefits

Soft skills development
Students receive feedback on their participation in group work. They identify their strengths and areas for improvement.

Identifying free-riders
Teachers can easily identify which groups are working well and which are having difficulties.

Customize grades
Teachers can customize each participant's grade for group work by applying a bonus or penalty based on this type of assessment.

Improving teamwork
Students understand how to contribute positively to teamwork.

Increased involvement
Students who are used to relying on others become more involved if they know that an assessment of this type will take place.

How does an intra-group peer review work?

On ChallengeMe, an intra-group assessment consists of at least 2 phases with deadlines defined by the teacher. All interactions between students are anonymous.

The group member evaluation phase

Participants must evaluate their teammates with whom they have worked on a joint project, according to criteria and evaluation methods defined by the teacher. An assessment may comprise several elements:

  • Criteria for different evaluation methods (stars, scores, selection of observable elements, etc.) for the quantitative part, and the creation of a score.
  • Text feedback to help the student progress.

At the same time, participants are asked to self-assess their contribution to the group work. The fact that self-assessment takes place at the same time gives participants a more objective view.

The scoring and results display phase

Participants can consult their results according to the options defined by the teacher, who can decide whether or not to show participants their assessments, their average by criterion, details of text feedback received, the average for all participants, and so on. Several methods for calculating grades and penalties are available.
